Quick Review: Colourpop Super Shock Cheek Highlighter in Smokin' Whistles

With all the highlighting game going on, I decided it is all in the good name of research to try out a highlighter from the brand Colourpop as I was going to put in an order for some of their products that I wanted to try out anyway (their lippie stixs are my favourite). I tried on the highlighter not knowing what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Here is a quick review of the product:

Name: Super Shock Cheek in Smokin' Whistles
Type: Highlighter/Luminizer
Colour: Peachy pink
Form: Cream/mousse
Brand: Colourpop
Application: Best to use fingers with this product and tap gently to blend. A latex sponge also works well. It can also be applied with a synthetic foundation brush, but the application will be light.

Like all colourpop cheek (and also eye) products, this highlighter shares the same interesting spongey-mousse-like texture. This product by no means gives a subtle glow to the cheek, it gives an obvious headlight-brightness that could stop traffic. With that said, this product has evident glitters in it that can be noticeable under certain lighting and if you have dry skin, you might want to exfoliate first or skip powdering because the glitter pieces might get caught on dry skin and accentuate the skin texture.

Noticeable chunks of glitters can be seen at a certain angle
To compare, I put Smokin' Whistles and Mary Lou-manizer from theBalm side by side, so you can have a better idea of how this highlighter will look. They both are by no means of the same colour, finish or texture. The comparison is just to help with visualizing the product as Mary Lou-manizer is quite a common highlighter.

Now the fun part, application on face!

Final thoughts:

Despite being a chunky highlighter, the glitters are hardly noticeable on the face. I would suggest to moisturize face first prior to application. I used a semi-matte foundation for this look (Kate powderless foundation) because I want the highlighter to stand out on its own. However, I will strongly suggest not to use a powder underneath this because it might make the highlighter look chalky. This highlighter gives a very wet looking effect on my skin tone, which is something I like. I like my highlighters to be blindingly intense. This highlighter might not be everyone's cup of tea especially the texture and formula might be a little turn off to some.

This colour is nothing special. I believe there are other highlighters in the market that can perform the same or even better. Do not get me wrong, I love this highlighter and I will continue wearing it, but it is definitely not the firs thing I pull out of my drawer in search for a highlighter. Although, I recently found anew way to wear this, all over my eyelids and in the inner corner. It gives such a dewy and fresh look to the eyes. Perfect for a no-makeup makeup look.

Verdict:

Product: 3/5
Colour: 2/5
Application: 2/5
Longevity: 3/5
Price: 5/5

Thank you for reading! Next I will review the lippie stixs!
