Four skincare steps that I swear by and will not continue to live on without.

I wanted to make a thorough and educational skincare post, but due to an overwhelming request, here are some quick suggestions of skincare tips and products to up your skincare game. I try to make this as comprehensive possible so that it will be easy for you to navigate through and make decisions.

1. Layering toners/essences.

What is it? This method is targeted to increase the skin's hydration which will ultimately improve your complexion. It is pretty much straightforward; applying watery skincare products which are typically toners and essences more than one time.
*This trend started gaining popularity in Korea sometime in 2016 and is commonly known as '7 skin method'. The word 'skin' here refers to toner or essences and 7 is the number of applications you apply onto your skin.

Who is it for? EVERYONE. I cannot recommend this tip enough to just everyone that passes me by. It does not matter what type of skin do you have because everyone can benefit from skin hydration.

Benefits? Extreme hydration and your skin will feel supple and bouncy. Yes, you read that right, your skin will feel bouncy.

How? Do this without using a cotton pad, instead pour a good amount onto your palms and apply right away by patting the product into your skin. Follow immediately with subsequent applications. Apply 3, 5 or 7 layers.
*there are no rules to the number of application really, but 2 seems to little and more than 7 seems exhaustive and wasteful

What to use? It is very important to NOT use astringent toners, toners with alcohol and toners with high percentage of AHA/BHA (acids). Use mild toners marketed for hydration with a watery consistency to ease the absorption.

2. Exfoliate

What is it? I cannot stress enough how important it is to exfoliate, I will do so in another long and comprehensive post. In short, exfoliation removes dead skin cells and promotes the turnover or 'renewal' of cells.

Who is it for? EVERYONE needs to include at least one exfoliation step in her/his skincare routine.

Benefits? Immediate soft, smooth and brighter complexion. Helps skincare ingredients to penetrate better into skin. Lighten pigmentation and acne scarring over time.

How? Depending on the type of exfoliating product, physical and chemical, and also the exfoliation strengths, strong or mild, the usage differs.

What to use? Try out chemical exfoliators if you feel like physical exfoliators are too rough for you.

My favourites

Simple Smoothing Facial Scrub (RM22, Watsons)

3. Facial oils

What is it? Oils formulated for face to use in place of moisturiser.

Who is it for? Dull, dehydrated, dry skin. Even if you have combo or oily skin you can benefit from using oil on your face, just find the right blend and you won't even feel it on your skin.

Benefits? Other than providing extra moisture for dry skin, oils like rose hip and argan oils are rich in antioxidants and lipids that provide nourishment for the skin and help to reduce wrinkles and fine lines.

How? Using facial oil once a day in the pm is enough. Use it as the last step of your skincare routine. If you decide to use oil in the am, follow with a sunscreen with high SPF.

What to use? Try 100% cold pressed rose hip, argan or marula oil.

4. Sunscreen

What is it? An umbrella for your face

Who is it for? EVERYONE. Not just when you go out of the house. As long as you see the sun, even though through a window, you need to apply sunscreen. The 60-year-old you in the future will thank you.

Benefits? Prevents/slow down the signs of ageing such as hyper-pigmentation and wrinkles.

How? Use this at the last step of your am skincare routine. If you use facial oils, sunscreen should go after. My rule of thumb, the higher the SPF, the better the sunscreen.

What to use? There two types of sunscreen, chemical and physical/mineral. There is no significant evidence that one is superior to the other. Chemical sunscreen (ingredients may include oxybenzoneavobenzoneoctisalate and octocrylene) is more common and easier to find than physical (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide). If you find yourself reacting bad to chemical sunscreen, you can try physical sunscreen as it is deemed 'safer' due to its nature of not penetrating the skin. Most sunscreen nowadays use a blend of the two.

There you go. Four steps that I swear by and would not dare to miss in my skincare routine. I hope you find this somewhat helpful.

Have a great skin beautiful!

A little disclaimer is almost necessary for such a regretful-sounding title. I loved my wedding. The day was sunny and bright, the imam came on time, the groom's party was well attended to and my family and bridesmaids ran the entire show without a glitch (well except for one minor door gift slip which my bridesmaids gracefully took care of).

Basically, most of the things that I cannot possibly control like the weather and the imam's punctuality, went well, and that is my greatest regret yet because the things that I wanted to be better, were all within my control. There is a tight feeling in my chest as type this down but I need to gather my thoughts and sort it out so that future bride-to-bes can do better than me and will be able to relive their wedding day memories with little to no regrets.

  1. I wish I did some research on wedding photographies and discuss the types of photos and poses that I like with the photographer, prior to the wedding day. Money does not always mean quality. At first I had snagged a good deal (RM1800 for photo and video for 2 events) with a small time photographer who was just starting up at the time and his then portfolio was small but his photos were beautiful, but I ended up with another team recommended by my wedding emcee. We came to the decision thinking that the team, being a professional team working with a television network would definitely produce great photos especially at a whopping service fee of RM4000 for photos and videos. Well I was proven wrong. The photos were mediocre. No the photos were not terrible, but instead of photos taken at a wedding, they look like photos taken at a company annual dinner. The photos were stiff and un-lively. There were no cute photos that I feel like I wanted to put on instagram. They did not instruct or direct me to pose a certain way or try different angles. I could go on and on about the things they did not do/did wrong but that is not my main point. I wish that prior to the wedding, I had looked up and saved some wedding photos and poses that I like and would like to recreate or just for inspiration and discuss them with the photography team.
  2. I wish I had tried on my full wedding outfit days before the wedding. I had my wedding ensemble ready two weeks before the big day and till this day I am kicking myself for not thinking of trying out the outfit with all the accessories. My dress was simple as I wanted to be comfortable on the actual day but had I known better, there are several things that I wish I had done. I wish I had tried on the scarf for my hijab as it turned out to be too long for me and I did not like the shape that it made. I wish I had on taller heels despite wanting to be comfortable as my wedding was a full morning-to-evening event because I need the extra height to look good in photos.
  3. I wish I had tried out a few photo poses and facial expressions for the wedding photography. As I can never guarantee if the photographers will turn out to be satisfactory even after a pre-wedding discussion, I can always count on my poses and facial expressions to be how I like them to be. Sadly, I didn't think of them earlier.
  4. I wish I had been more picky and detailed to my seamstress. Honestly my reception dress was my favourite part of the wedding. My nikah dress however, was not. It turned out to be different than what was discussed with the seamstress. I was too caught up in my sisters', who were also my bridesmaids, dresses that I just brushed it off and regretted it immediately after looking at the wedding photos. My nikah outfit was in a different cut than what was agreed to and it did not complement my body at all.
  5. I wish I had been more picky and detailed to my mak andam. I asked for no calla lilies and guess what did I get for my nikah bouquet? Calla lilies.
  6. I wish I did a better job with the seating chart. People can just be assholes and cancel without telling you. I will just leave this at that.
  7. I wish I did not worry too much on the day and enjoyed myself instead. Honestly the reception event practically ran itself. I had no need to worry and yet I did and as a result, I was anxious the whole day.
All in all, I have had a beautiful wedding despite the regrets. I only hope that future brides can learn from my mistakes so that no brides will be anything but happy on their wedding day and looking back at it.

We all have some type of exfoliator on our bathroom counter be it classic scrubs like the St. Ives Apricot Scrub or Skin Food Black Sugar Scrub which are my favourites or the game changing automatic facial cleansing brush made popular by the brand Clarisonic (not labeled as an exfoliator, but it can be used as one). Whatever our preference may be, we acknowledge the importance of including exfoliation in our skincare routine. Another exfoliating method that has made its way onto our bathroom counters and into our hearts is the chemical peel.

A chemical peel (or enzyme peel) uses chemical solution to remove outer layer of skin. It fundamentally causes skin to blister and eventually peel off revealing a fresh layer of newly regenerated skin. Chemical peels have claim to be able to reduce fine lines, improve appearance of mild scars, treat certain types of acne, reduce age spots freckles and melasma and improve the look and texture of skin. There a few different types of chemical peels which differ in the type and amount of chemical used for the peel and these different types of peels penetrates separate levels of skin layer thus they also differ in procedure. The typical types of acids used in chemical peels are alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) and beta hydroxy acids (BHA).

Initially only done at the physician’s office, skincare brands have come up with their own version of at-home chemical peels. These at-home peels are not the same ones as the ones used at your local dermatologist. They are, of course, much milder and does not require a medical license to perform. Although lacking in ‘peeling’ intensity and professional handling, it does not deter from performing little magic at home.

The term ‘chemical’ might scare some people off but fret not, chemical peels are not harsh on the skin, instead it is better suit people with sensitive skin as the skin is not damaged by abrasives from physical exfoliators. Most chemical peels uses plant derived acids or enzymes as their active ingredients. When applied, you will feel somewhat of a tingling sensation on the applied skin areas, don’t worry it means that the peel works.

After trying out chemical peels, I am a convert. I do still use my trustee scrubs once in while when I need to feel the satisfaction of physical scrubbing on my face which you do not get with chemical peels as there are no scrubbing bits (its all in my head really). I use my chemical peels every two weeks or whenever I feel that my skin is looking a bit sad and needed a little perk-me-up. Below are two of my favourites.

  1. Mirenesse Power Lift organic Super Line Peel, RM 217

Every time I use this overnight peel, I will wake up to the smoothest and brightest skin. It is marketed to reduce fine lines but I cannot vouch for that as I cannot see any  improvements for my fine lines but what it does instead is it smoothens out rough patches on my face, reduce discoloration from new scars tremendously and boy do I glow!

This product tingles for about 3 minutes right after application.

  1. Etude House Magic Bubble Brush Peeling Foam, RM 69

I use this foam in the bath as often as two times a week. Unlike the previous one, this does not tingle my skin which made me doubt its peeling efficiency, but nevertheless my skin feels smoother and looks brighter right after usage so something must be working. Plus it smells heavenly and the rubber brush is feels good on the skin.

Would I recommend chemical/enzyme peel? Absolutely! To learn more about at-home-chemical peels read here and for more suggestions on the best peels to try, read here

Silkygirl Matte Junkie Lip Cream. Top, 01 Retro. Bottom, 04 Vintage.

With brands coming out left and right with their own version of matte liquid lipsticks, this matte lip trend is far away from ending. It's about time for local brand Silkygirl to join in the craze and give us their take on the mass favourite lip product. They have a total of 5 colour selections and this review here is only on the two colours I purchased.

Silkygirl Matte Junkie Lip Cream. Top, 01 Retro. Bottom, 04 Vintage.

Formula: Light, whipped mousse-y texture similar to the Soft Matte Lip Creams from NYX, thus very comfortable to wear. Like most lip products with whipped mousse-y texture, they tend to be comfortable on the lips. They do not dry out your lips so your lips won't be looking like a sad prune (but I advise to always use a lip balm prior to using ANY matte formulas, your lips will thank you).

Application: Both of the colours apply a bit streaky. I applied two layers to get even application on my lips. I would suggests a thin application first, and then another layer on top for full on colour.

Longevity: Does not transfer and lasts long! It made it through lunch and several cups of coffee.

Colours: Total of 5 colour selections. 01 Retro is a muted terracotta with a slight pink undertone. 04 is   a medium toned dusty rose. All of the colours seem to have a muted/pastel undertone.

Price: RM 18-20

Final thougts: If you are a newbie in matte liquid lipsticks, I would definitely suggest you to try out these because of the accessibility and quality. It may not have a huge range of colour selection but it is nothing that you cannot work with.

I have had several relationships before. Good ones and bad ones. The thing about relationships is that they all end. Either by choice (breakups, divorce) or by force (death). All my past relationships ended by choice and it got me thinking about what have I learned along the way from my first relationship at the tender age of 16 until today at my glory age of 26. So here is a decade of relationship lessons that I have learned.

1. Talk talk TALK. Now this may seem basic but I cannot stress enough the importance of talking and opening up to your partner. We are not mind readers, no matter how good you think you know each other. Talk when something is bothering you, no matter how difficult it may be because a clear understanding between two parties can only be achieved when there is unhindered communication and with clear understanding THEN can only be a discussion of options and decision making.

2. Meet me halfway. Sometimes there is no way that we can agree 100% with our counterpart. There will be instances that one just cannot say yes to the other's say, we are all different people after all. This is where you compromise. When there is a disagreement of two totally different opinions, work around the available options and find a happy middle that both can get what you want without hurting the other. Compromising is tricky. There will be sacrifices of blood and tears, not really, not blood but probably tears. Again, the key is to communicate and find alternatives to cater to both parties' needs and preferences.

3. I got you. One of the biggest perk of being in a relationship is that, you can count on someone to always be on your team. Be his support system, his confidante, his number one fan and him, yours. Research has shown that one of the main reasons people look for relationship is to have someone to share support and care with. With that said, it does not mean that you must support and encourage everything blindly. Support comes in many different forms, from constructive criticism to taking part in what your partner does. Showing interest in what your partner do shows that you care and active participation (read his blogs, compliments/criticize his songs) lets your partner know that he has your support, plus its a confidence boost.

4. I hear you. Listening, the very opposite of talking. When you have a partner, you have someone to always be there for your joys and woes. A critical part of being there for someone is to actually just listen. You do not need to understand or agree to what your partner has to say but there will be a time when you do not really want someone to agree or disagree with you, you just want them to simply listen. So at time like this, shut your mouth, refrain from making comments or suggestions, and just listen.

5. Little things. If relationship is a game, then this is the cheat code. Do the little things. A note on the bedside table, flowers on her front door, buy him stationeries, socks of his favourite cartoon character, basically any little things that reminds you of your partner, do it.

6. Family affairs. Never talk about your problems with your partner to your family members, ESPECIALLY when he/she is not a part of the family (not married) yet. I am not married so I cannot really say how bad it will be, but I know family is a big part of marriage. When you are marrying someone, you are marrying his/her entire family. So before tying the knot, sealing the deal, whatever you may want to call it, do not talk bad about your partner to your family members (unless its a terrible concern that might result to ending the relationship then by all means).

7. Take one for the team. When it calls for a sacrifice to be made, do it if it is the best for the both of you. Take the blame, miss that one game to go to her office dinner, let her get her pick for the bedroom wall colour. Sometimes, these little sacrifices will just save all that energy that you both could spend fighting but just make sure that it is for a rational and valid cause.

8. Big spender. This is a common thing that everyone does in relationships, spoiling your partner. Yes it is extremely tempting to shower your partner with gifts but remember, each spending is an investment. In relationships you invest your love in someone, and to show your investment, you spend time and money on them. It is fine and I highly recommend for a happy relationship (winks), but be wary, especially when you are just starting. Like investments, relationships can fail as well.

Those are some of the lessons I learned on the 10-year journey of being in different relationships. There are definitely more on the list but for now, but these 8 are the ones that I would like to share (the ones that i could think of actually). I am writing these lessons as a tribute to my 10th year in relationships and I hope that you enjoy this piece and find it somewhat helpful. Thanks for reading.
